Truck Lift Kit Installation

Complete suspension overhaul with 3-inch lift kit for improved ground clearance and off-road capability.

After years of hitting trails and pushing my truck to its limits, I decided it was time for a serious suspension upgrade. This project took me three weekends in the garage, but the results were worth every bolt turned.

Planning the Build

I spent weeks researching different lift kit options, comparing brands, and reading reviews from other overlanders. The goal was to gain 3 inches of lift while maintaining ride quality and reliability.

Planning the Build

Parts and Tools

This build required specialized tools including a spring compressor, torque wrench, and jack stands rated for heavy loads. I opted for a complete kit that included new shocks, coil springs, and all necessary hardware.

Parts and Tools

Installation Process

The installation started with safely lifting the truck and removing the wheels. Each corner was tackled methodically, ensuring proper torque specs and alignment throughout. The trickiest part was compressing the new springs safely.

Installation Process

Results and Testing

The difference was immediately noticeable. Ground clearance increased significantly, and the truck handled rough terrain with confidence. After a professional alignment, it drove better than ever on the highway too.

Results and Testing

Final Thoughts

This lift kit transformed my truck's capability. Whether you're planning a similar build or just curious about the process, I hope this helps. The best part? Every trail is now more accessible.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Always use properly rated jack stands and never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack
  • Take photos of the stock setup before disassembly for reference
  • Have your alignment done professionally after installation
  • Break in new suspension components with 500 miles of varied driving before serious off-roading

Custom Roof Rack Build

Custom Roof Rack Build

DIY aluminum roof rack with integrated lighting and mounting points for expedition gear.

Store-bought roof racks were either too expensive or didn't have the features I needed. So I decided to build my own custom aluminum rack with exactly the mounting points and layout I wanted.

Design Phase

I sketched multiple designs, considering weight distribution, aerodynamics, and mounting locations for lights, awning, and recovery boards. The final design balanced functionality with a clean look.

Design Phase

Materials and Fabrication

Using 1.5-inch aluminum tubing and corner gussets, I cut and welded the main frame. Aluminum was chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, perfect for all-weather use.

Materials and Fabrication

Mounting and Accessories

The rack mounts to the factory roof rails with custom brackets. I integrated LED light bar mounts, tie-down points, and a quick-release system for the MaxTrax recovery boards.

Mounting and Accessories

Final Assembly

After powder coating for durability, final assembly included wiring the LED lights through weatherproof conduit. The rack adds minimal wind noise and has proven incredibly useful on every trip.

Final Assembly

Final Thoughts

Building a custom roof rack was more affordable than buying commercial options and gave me exactly what I needed. The skills learned here apply to many other custom fabrication projects.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Calculate weight capacity carefully and stay well under your vehicle's roof load rating
  • Use rubber or foam between the rack and roof to prevent paint damage
  • Wire LED lights through a relay to avoid draining the battery
  • Consider aerodynamics in your design to minimize fuel economy impact

Overlanding Trip Setup
Camping Beginner January 20, 2024 5 min read

Overlanding Trip Setup

Complete expedition prep including rooftop tent, storage solutions, and essential gear organization.

Preparing for a multi-day overlanding trip requires careful planning and organization. This article covers how I set up my truck for a week-long expedition into remote backcountry.

Rooftop Tent Setup

The rooftop tent is the centerpiece of my camp setup. Mounting it securely to the roof rack and ensuring it opens smoothly took some adjustment, but now deployment takes just two minutes.

Storage Organization

Every piece of gear has its place. I use weatherproof storage boxes in the bed, drawer systems for tools and recovery gear, and roof-mounted storage for lighter items like camping chairs and tarps.

Storage Organization

Water and Food Systems

Carrying 20 gallons of fresh water in jerry cans, plus a portable fridge for food, means I can stay off-grid for a week. The fridge runs off the truck's auxiliary battery system.

Water and Food Systems

Recovery and Safety Gear

Recovery boards, traction pads, a hi-lift jack, and a full first aid kit are always accessible. A satellite communicator provides emergency contact when cell service isn't available.

Recovery and Safety Gear

Final Thoughts

A well-organized overlanding setup makes every trip more enjoyable and safer. Start with the essentials and build your system over time based on your actual needs on the trail.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Create a checklist and use it before every trip
  • Keep recovery gear accessible, not buried under other equipment
  • Test all systems in your backyard before heading into remote areas
  • Pack heavier items low and centered for better vehicle stability
